RIP Sue Martin-Smith

It is with much sadness that we note the passing of Sue Martin-Smith. Sue died just before midnight on Sunday 23rd September. The funeral was Thursday 27th, attended by a number of fans who knew her. There was a retrospective slideshow followed by the communal singing of that much loved hymn ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’.

Sue was a central figure in NZ fandom over a couple of decades starting in the late ’70s. She made very major contributions to conventions, the club scene, fanzines and other fannish activities. She founded the Phoenix SF Society in Wellington which is still running today (and was first editor of its magazine). She was also one of the founders of FFANZ which also continues to operate promoting fannish cooperation.

We extend our deepest condolences to Sue’s family and all her loved ones.

  1. I knew Sue at Auckland University in the 1980s and briefly at Phoenix in Wellington in 1987. This is very sad news.
