The Tripods – a 6 episode series

A prequel to the tripods BBC TV series explaining what happened when the tripods arrived.

Made by a Palmerston North 14 year old and his friends, the series has taken a year of filming, endured braces on and off, different hairstyles, and growth spurts.

It’s an all-kid affair with adult involvement minimal and closely supervised. Special effects are old school, with 3D printed Tripods, material/cardboard green screens and clay feet.

Years in the making Anton and Nina imaged what the future would be like. Will it be a post-apocalyptic survival or, a future where everybody wears the same thing and live in peace with robots in a bubble city.

Either way we want to take photos of it, gather evidence and travel there.

Photonflux is the place where possible future will be planned, discussed and changed.

The headquarters offers the revolutionary fluxbun, a fried dough filled with various flavours in a casual setting. For World UFO Day your filling will be in the hands of our creative chef.

However if you do not wish to be pleasantly surprised you can pick from our menu.

The bar host craft beer, single barrel whiskies, Kombucha and organic wines and six barrel soda.

The objective is to attract like-minded people who support creativity, the idea of Scifi and appreciate the art of making art.

Anton Sounes (a Sounes Photo) has his photography studio on the second floor and are planning to capture all those who wish to be captured. Be creative and join in.

Free to a good home

A large collection of science fiction magazines from the 1950s – 1970’s needs a new home

Some of the collections are entire, with Astounding and Fantasy just two of the titles.

They belonged to the owner’s father who was an avid science fiction collector for all of his life.  She has held the collection for 30 years but can longer house them and would love to donate the collection to someone or some ones who would cherish them. She is reluctant to sell them because she is hoping to find someone would want them for their own pleasure.

LexiCon now open for registrations!

It’s time to book your spot at the 38th New Zealand National Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention, being held at Queen’s Birthday Weekend 2017 in Taupō.

Head to the event’s new website www.lexicon.cons.nz where you can register early and book accommodation, all in one place.

Convention Committee co-chair Cassie Hart says the new website is the first step in the lead up to what is going to be an exciting event.

“We wanted to make things easy for everyone by having a one stop shop where you can register for the convention, book a room at the event venue and sign up for convention news updates,” says Cassie.

Student/unwaged, general and solidarity memberships are available.

“We have membership options available to suit a range of situations,” says Cassie “but we ask that attendees remember this is a fan run convention and every dollar they invest will go towards making it the best it can be.”

Further details and Guest of Honour will be announced in June.

“We have an exciting International Guest of Honour booked to come to New Zealand and all will be revealed very soon,” says Cassie. “Keep checking the website and Facebook page for details.”

Berlin, Germany: Writer-producer-director Alexander Pfander has just launched the new episode of his award-winning sci-fi web series, MISSION BACKUP EARTH.

The series has gained rave reviews and numerous accolades over the last few years, including Best Sci-fi and Grand Jury Prize at Melbourne Webfest, along with Awards at the LA Webfest for Outstanding Directing, Visual Effects, Editing & Cinematography in a sci-fi series. Plus other additional nominations and has been also awarded for best visual effects in a web-series by the Web Series Mag.

The series follows the struggle of humanity to colonize a habitable exoplanet.

In the near future, a cosmic catastrophe hits the Earth without warning. Unforeseen by any scientist, the Sun transits rapidly into a red giant. Having no choice, mankind must escape the solar system. The survivors become space nomads, seeking a viable replacement for Earth.

David Prowse has given a guest appearance in the new Episode and plays the scientist who develops the mission to save human kind from extinction. Mr. Prowse joined the ensemble for a number of guest appearances that will be further shown in future episodes.

Submissions now open for 2016 Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Story Award

Details:

1. Entry is free, but entrants should be current members of SFFANZ, or registered to attend the 2016 national conference Au Contraire 3. A link to SFFANZ can be found here. A link to the Au Contraire 3 membership page can be found here.
2. Submitted stories can address any theme providing it is speculative (science fiction, fantasy, horror or any sub-genre is acceptable), and should have a word count of 3000 words or less.
3. Original stories only, no reprints or simultaneous submissions, please.
4. Writers are welcome to submit more than one story.
5. Standard formatting:  Ariel or Times New Roman, 12pt, 1.5 spaced, indenting for paragraphs, with the story title and numbering included as page header. Submissions are blind, so your name should only appear in your cover email and NOT on the manuscript.
6. Stories for an adult audience are fine, but those with gratuitous sex, gore and violence are unlikely to be shortlisted.
7. Please send your stories as a .doc or .rtf attachment to: ac2016storyaward@gmail.com with Submission: Your Story Title in the subject line. (Remember to ensure that your name or email address DO NOT appear on the manuscript).
8. Competition closes at midnight 31 March 2016. Entries received after this date will not be read. All participants will be notified of the results by late April, 2016.

 

**Please note that entry to the award automatically assumes that the winning entrant will allow first print publication of their story by Au Contraire 3 in its Convention Programme to be distributed to convention members (all other rights to be retained by the author).

 

 

MIDAMERICON II ANNOUNCES HUGO NOMINATION PERIOD OPEN

Kansas City, Missouri, USA – MidAmeriCon II, the 74th World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon), is delighted to announce that the 2016 Hugo Award and 1941 Retro Hugo Award nomination period is now open.

Nomination ballots will be accepted from January 28, 2016, to Thursday, March 31, 2016, 11:59 PM PDT for the prestigious Hugo Awards and the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Members of MidAmeriCon II and Worldcon 75 (the 2017 Worldcon) who joined by January 31, 2016, and all members of Sasquan, the 2015 Worldcon, are invited to submit nominating ballots.

The Hugo Awards are the premier award in the science fiction genre, honoring science fiction literature and media as well as the genre’s fans. The Awards were first presented at the 1953 World Science Fiction Convention in Philadelphia (Philcon II), and they have continued to honor science fiction and fantasy notables for more than 60 years.
